1 in 4 people will experience mental health problems in their lifetime, it is an epidemic that is debilitating to all members of society. The WHO estimates that depression and anxiety, the most common forms of mental illness will be the leading cause of global disability burden by 2020.
Encuro Blocks are designed to communicate and visualise problems, both emotional and practical. Depression can make everyday things such as cleaning or having a shower very overwhelming, support from family and friends can help ease the burden.
Users tag their problems into each cube via the app. The blocks can be made into a structure, and displayed somewhere noticeable. Friends and family can scan to see their problems and help solve them together. When a problem is solved, they can remove the block from the structure; over time, the user will see mountain of problems slowly shrinking.
A literature review was carried out to find out why MHPs are such a problem to society, then, extensive user research was carried out with 3 user groups to find out why people do not get the help they need; those with experience with mental health problems (MHPs), professionals (psychologists and psychiatrists), and the general public (due to the high prevalence in MHPs, statically, everyone will have immediate contact with people with MHPs). Methods included in-depth interviews, scenario role plays, and a self created method of emotional timelines.
As mental health is a highly subjective and private, cultural probes were used to document the personal experience of people with MHPs. An emotional timeline method was conceptualised (due to confidentiality, this is a dummy example).
Results from the above methods were analysed and five key findings were found. The data was made into personas and a virtual reality mood boardwas made for google cardboard.

Divergent, convergent, then divergent again. This was the process used to generate first a multitude of ideas in a short amount of time, elimination of the impossible ideas, and expansion of the ones kept
The following selection of 5 ideas were pitched to the general public, it was found that users were more likely to use the block idea as well as the mood ring. All ideas were pitched as stories for users to gain a better understanding in context.
